INST362 - SAVVY UX TEAM 12

USABILITY TESTING FOR PROTOTYPE
TESTING RATIONALE
WHAT YOU'VE PROTOTYPED
We created several 2D prototype design of pedestrian bridges
THE FEATURE(S) YOU WILL TEST
We would like to test whether or not the user travels from one side to the other by bridge or just crossing the road, along with a number of other factors like vehicle traffic, pedestrian traffic, convenience, and weather.
WHAT YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT THOSE FEATURES
Efficiency (is it worth using the bridge?)
Decisions of the user based based on certain scenarios
WHO YOU'LL TEST WITH (WHICH PERSONAS, # OF PARTICIPANTS TO ENGAGE)
Those we have interviewed in the past and who prefer to walk/bike
5-9 people
THE TASKS YOU'LL HAVE THEM CARRY OUT
We will provide drawings/storytelling with images and simulate the experience based on their instructions
ANY OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS YOU WILL ASK
Does building the bridge aid in the overall flow of transportation on campus?
Will pedestrians actually use the bridges or continue to cross the street?
Will this increase the flow of traffic?
More specific:
Would stairs or escalators be more preferred?
Should the stairs/escalators allow going up and down or one-way?
Would it be more preferred if the stairs/escalators went up to the bridge like a upside-down v shape or something similar to escalator design in malls or emergency staircases (tight and compact)
DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL SCORE HOW YOUR PROTOTYPE DOES IN SUPPORTING THE TASKS (BOTH QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA)
Scoring what routes they take - did they take the bridge?
Negative/Positive feedback
USABILITY TEST SCRIPT AND SCENARIOS
INTRODUCTION
- Good morning/afternoon/evening. My name is ____, and I am a student working on learning about the Transportation at UMD. Today, I will be observing and taking notes on the task you will complete today and score you on how you did.
- Thank you for joining our study. Before we begin, I will brief you on what the task you are about to complete and what to expect.
- I would also like to inform you that this research has no known risks.
DISCLOSURES AND INFORMED CONSENT
- First, we are testing the design and not you, the user. We’re interested in your honest feedback and opinions, and there are no right or wrong answers. Your answers will be confidential and we won’t link your name to anything that we discuss today.
- We will take notes, and will also be recording this discussion. The recordings will only be used for this study and will not be released to anyone not involved in the research. Is it okay with you if we record?
[If yes, start recording]
- Our discussion will last depending on how fast you complete your task and answer the follow-up questions.
GUIDELINES AND WARM UP
Before we begin, do you have any questions?
If not, please remember to:
Speak loudly and clearly when narrating your choices and answers to the questions.
To start off with, can you please introduce yourself. What is your name, year, and major? Great, let us begin our task.
TRANSITION TO TEST
The task you’ll be completing is looking at a series of images/drawings and choosing which one that is something you would do. On this document I have shared with you, I will read and give you several scenarios and you will move the icon of your choice and drag it next to the image of your choosing. After each choice, please explain why you made your choice. Once all scenarios have been completed by the choices that best fit what you would do, you will answer several follow-up questions on some general questions regarding the experience and the project task as a whole.
SCENARIOS AND TASKS
Scenarios 1-4
It’s a sunny day with heavy/light traffic. You are starting inside/outside the building. How will you cross to the other side?
Scenarios 5-8
It’s a rainy day with heavy/light traffic. You are starting inside/outside the building. How will you cross to the other side?
Scenarios 9-12
It’s a cloudy day with heavy/light traffic. You are starting inside/outside the building. How will you cross to the other side?
Scenarios 13-16
It’s a snowy day with heavy/light traffic. You are starting inside/outside the building. How will you cross to the other side?
CLOSING DISCUSSIONS
Qualitative Questions:
On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being highly approved, what will you rate the level of you approving bridges like this being built on campus?
What were the strengths and areas of improvement you saw in the bridge design(s)?
Closing Questions:
Does building the bridge aid in the overall flow of transportation on campus?
Will pedestrians actually use the bridges or continue to cross the street?
Will this increase the flow of traffic?
Would stairs or escalators be more preferred?
Should the stairs/escalators allow going up and down or one-way?
Would it be more preferred if the stairs/escalators went up to the bridge like a upside-down v shape or something similar to escalator design in malls or emergency staircases (tight and compact)
Final Thoughts:
Do you have any final thoughts or recommendations about the project or on any of the tasks or questions in this discussion?
Thank you again for your time and participation!
